Adventurers have come together at the Royal Geographical Society in London in order to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s famous ascent of Mount Everest on the 29th of May 1953.
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh attended the event and former and current mountaineers joined the sons of Sir Hillary and Sir Norgay to celebrate their great triumph. The event involved on screen footage of the historic achievement, an Everest exhibition and allowed people to meet the climbers and the families of climbers past.
Since their efforts to climb the highest mountain in the world, many other mountaineers have followed in their footsteps. Motivational speaker and successful Everest climber, Debra Searle MBE attended the impressive event. Other well known mountaineers who have successfully climbed Mount Everest are Cathy O’Dowd, Jake Meyer, Chris Bonington, Bear Grylls, who was the youngest Briton to have climbed it and famous explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
