Scottish tennis star Andy Murray was voted the British Sports Personality of the Year, the ceremony took place in the First Direct Arena in Leeds. British Lions rugby player Leigh Halfpenny came in second place followed by AP McCoy in third.
Andy was not able to attend the event due to his training commitments in Miami and he therefore accepted his award over skype. Famous tennis player Martina Navratilova was in Miami to hand the SPOTY trophy to Andy and in his acceptance speech he stated ‘I know sometimes I'm not the easiest person to support but I've had a lot of pressure on me for a long time. I'm glad I managed to do it.’
Andy came third in SPOTY 2012 behind Jessica Ennis in second place and Bradley Wiggins who won the award, Bradley was at the event to announce this year’s winner.
The awards were hosted by Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan and Clare Balding; other winners included the British and Irish Lions team who were crowned the Team of the Year and Sir Alec Ferguson received the SPOTY Diamond Award for his 26 years as Manager of Manchester United.
