The Hollywood actress, Angelina Jolie has had a double mastectomy in order to reduce her chances of breast cancer.
Doctors estimated that Angelina had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer and by having a mastectomy she would be able to reduce these risks. Angelina, who is 37 lost her mother to cancer at the young age of 56, and her risk of her contracting the disease was high.
Angelina’s decision to go public with this news was courageous and will hopefully encourage women all over the world to do the same if necessary. The battle against cancer is one that we are constantly aware of due to the publicity it receives through the media and charity fund raising and therefore it is important that celebrities use their status to highlight the dangers of the disease.
Other celebrities who have famously suffered from cancer include inspirational speakers such as Trisha Goddard and Bob Champion, both now speak about their experiences with it and how they overcame it.
Angelina is encouraging woman to have confidence in themselves and their new physical appearance after surgery. Another woman known for her beauty who had to overcome a change in her appearance is inspirational speaker, Katie Piper. Katie was the victim of an acid attack and went through huge amounts of surgery to repair the damage to her face; she publicised her experience to help other people who have undergone serious physical changes after surgery.
