The fourth presenter on Top Gear, The Stig, Ben Collins took the driving seat in the Tumbler (the new Batmobile) in recent release The Dark Knight Rises.
Under the watchful eye of director Chrisopher Nolan, Ben worked with other stunt drivers and coordinator Tom Struthers, to film heart-racing scenes featuring the Tumbler tearing through the streets of Gotham.
He says that his time on Top Gear and then driving James Bond’s Aston Martin for Quantum of Solace gave him ample preparation for this latest stunt role, though driving the built-from-scratch Tumbler provided some interesting challenges.
All of the big action scenes in The Dark Knight Rises are real, which means that Ben Collins really was driving at speeds of over 110mph through the streets, squeezing through tunnels alongside two other drivers in identical Tumblers, power-sliding around corners, and peering through a hat-sized window in a hot interior filled with tubes and wires to see where he was going.
Not only that, but when the Tumbler arrived in the middle of a huge staged fight between the actors playing the police and a gang of dangerous criminals, Ben Collins had to jump out of the vehicle and join in
Being a part of The Dark Knight Rises and driving the Tumbler fulfilled a boyhood dream for Ben Collins, and hopefully watching his scenes in The Dark Knight will make his heart pick up a beat as it does when he watches Quantum of Solace.
