Former Commando and motivational speaker Ben McBean has won the Rotary Young Citizen Award 2012.
25 year old Ben is a double amputee who recovered from stepping on a Taliban landmine when he was serving in Afghanistan in 2008.
Less than 12 months later he ran the 2009 London Marathon, and again the following year, he competed - running on a hairline fracture the whole way round.
Ben also climbed to the base camp of Everest to help raise money for other injured service personnel.
Brought home on the same flight as Prince Harry who hailed him as a hero, Ben's injuries were so serious his chances of survival were slim. Not only did he survive but he is living a full and fruitful life.
Hugely inspiring as a top class corporate speaker, Ben motivates everyone he meets with his determined approach to a life without his left arm and right leg. His speech is humbling, uplifting and highlights his rigid belief that there is life after disaster.
Always looking for the next challenge, Ben will be taking on the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of The Child Bereavement Charity.
