The Krypton Factor returns to ITV prime time in january with Ben Shephard as the new host. The original series, which ran for 18 years, was presented by Gordon Burns, who now fronts the BBC's north-west England regional news bulletin.
Contestants were tested on their memory, logic and general knowledge before facing an army assault course. The new show will follow the same format, although ITV said the assault course would be "more gruelling than ever before", while the challenges have also been updated.
Ben said: "The Krypton Factor is an iconic UK show and I'm really excited to be picking up the mantle from the legend, Gordon Burns."
"As a kid, I was desperate to have a go on the assault course and make a mess of the puzzles. Having said that, considering the makeover the show is having for the 21st century, I'm very glad I'll be asking the questions not answering them."
Michael Kelpie, the ITV executive producer, added: "To compete on Krypton Factor, you've got to be an all-rounder, you've got to be the best of the best, a combination of brains and brawn."
Ben has also presented karaoke-themed contest Who Dares Wins and The Xtra Factor, a spin-off of X Factor. He also won a celebrity boxing competition against singer Lemar, which was staged in aid of Sport Relief.
