Bill Gates, technology pioneer, businessman and philanthropist, is amongst the acclaimed hosts at this year’s TED Conference in California.
He will work alongside TED's current curator, former British computer journalist and magazine publisher Chris Anderson; TED’s executive producer June Cohen; Bruno Giussani, European Director; Tom Rielly, Community Director, and futurist Juan Enriquez.
Scientists, explorers, media moguls, politicians, entertainers, artists and entrepreneurs will form the elite line-up at the world renowned TED Conference. Long Beach and Palm Springs are the sunny locations for this year’s gathering, entitled The Rediscovery of Wonder.
Boasting ‘a cast of characters capable of stirring the imagination as never before’, explorers, storytellers, photographers, scientific pioneers, visionaries and provocateurs from all parts of the globe will take the stage.
TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences curated by the American private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to disseminate "ideas worth spreading."
Many of the talks are available online, and in July 2010, the viewing figures stood at more than 290 million, reflecting a still growing global audience.
TED was founded in 1984 with an early emphasis largely on technology and design, but the events now address an increasingly wide range of topics within the research and practice of science and culture.
Past presenters include Bill Clinton, Malcolm Gladwell, Al Gore, Gordon Brown, Richard Dawkins, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and many Nobel Prize winners.
Each year, a $100,000 TED Prize is awarded for the winner to realize a chosen wish to change the world. This year’s winner is artist JR, swiping the crown off last year’s winner Jamie Oliver.
TED's mission statement begins:
‘We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we're building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.’
