UK Sport’s World Class Performance Conference 2010 is taking place at The Fairmont today in St. Andrews, Scotland. The conference comes at a critical time as Olympic and Paralympic coaches are preparing for the London 2012 Olympics and the annual conference has become a key opportunity for coaches, performance directors, and sports and medicine practitioners to debate, network, and discuss best practice. The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Courage’ and all the latest tips and theories will be considered.
Experts from the arts, business and the military will also be in attendance and awards host and facilitator Hazel Irvine will be joined by the legendary Frank Dick in his capacity as motivational speaker and former Olympic Coach. Rising star Ed Stafford - the first person to complete the ‘impossible feat’ of walking across the Amazon – will be discussing the experiences and lessons of his incredible 28 month journey alongside motivational and personal development speaker Jim Lawless. Jim went from being a City lawyer to a 9 ½ stone jockey sharing the weighing room with the likes of Frankie Dettori and now channels his energy and humour into his role as a change and peak performance consultant - with clients ranging from Apple to the NHS.
GB Performance Director Sara Symington is looking forward to the talks and discussions, “With 660 days left, London 2012 is now within touching distance and firmly on the horizon for all World Class programmes. The World Class Performance Conference enables everyone involved to assess how their preparations are shaping up for the next 660 days and provides a very necessary focal point every year for all of us involved in high performance sport to listen, interact, think differently and be inspired. The theme ‘courage’ is both timely and wholly relevant as the nation’s expectations increase and official medal targets become even more pertinent.”
So, we are well on the way to London 2012 and as any coach knows preparation is key! It will be great to hear more about the themes that emerge from this year’s conference and see how such concepts and ideas can be translated across all areas - from sport to science and business - in the pursuit of success and peak performance.
