Former CEO of Sainsbury’s Bank and keynote speaker, Hamish Taylor appeared in BBC Two Scotland’s ‘Teen Canteen’ programme.
The programme focuses on sixth year pupils who are working together over eight weeks to create a pop-up cafe in the last week. The project was aimed towards helping the pupils to improve their entrepreneurial skills.
Hamish and Fi Buchanan, owner of the popular Glaswegian delicatessen Heart and Buchanan, are there to mentor the pupils and lead them in the right direction. The school kids start out with only £6 and Hamish invests a further £10 to kick start their business venture.
Lots of chefs and restaurateurs have also helped the project, which hopes to help the pupils later on in life. One of the kids involved in the programme stated ‘The business side of what I took from the project is something I don't think will ever leave me…I definitely learned a lot about management and my own potential. It's something I would like to develop in the future and hopefully use the skills I learned on Teen Canteen’
Fi Buchanan also found the project rewarding and stated ‘I sat down last week to write my application to go back to university to study teaching. I hope to do secondary school home economics.’
‘Teen Canteen’ is on BBC Two Scotland on Tuesdays at 9pm.
