We would like to congratulate Geoff on his ongoing incredible achievements, having just received the Yachtsman of the Year Award!
Geoff is the first quadriplegic to sail around Great Britain and complete a single-handed voyage across the Atlantic. He has been awarded an MBE for his services to disabled sailing and he is a constant beacon reminding us that anything is possible. As Dame Ellen MacArthur says, “Your voyage was nothing short of exceptional, but to me that journey is simply a reflection of you.”
Geoff sailed across the Atlantic three times when he was only 18 years old but he experienced a terrible accident after diving into the sea and breaking his neck – over 25 years ago. Geoff spent a year in hospital and then went on to work in the marketing department of an international firm of chartered accountants for 12 years. He also became a qualified valuer and auctioneer before returning to his first love – the sea and sailing.
On receiving the award Geoff said “It is the biggest accolade in our sport and even now, the morning after, I’m sitting here at my desk looking at this magnificent trophy, grinning from ear to ear. The list of past winners is humbling; Dame Ellen Macarthur, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Dee Caffari, Sir Francis Chichester, the list reads like a “who’s who” in the history of yachting in our country – I am really so proud.”
As ever, Geoff is not slowing down just yet and he is looking forward to his next challenge – to become the first quadriplegic to sail around the world! He is always praised for his humble and inspiring approach and has received great feedback already from Citigroup, JP Morgan, Bupa and Syngenta for his speaking work.
We would like to wish Geoff all the very best for his next challenge!
