Business keynote speaker and Chief Executive of Ann Summers, Jacqueline Gold, reveals why she has been so successful and encourages entrepreneurial thinking in the UK.
Jacqueline stated recently that she did not excel at school and was constantly thinking of ways to make money and become financially independent. She joined the Ann Summers business, owned by her father and uncle at the age of 19, after a few years Jacqueline had introduced the ‘Ann Summers Party Plan’ concept and it was a huge success.
In a recent interview, Jacqueline spoke about the importance of encouraging entrepreneurial minds at school and she believes that ‘we should adopt a similar approach to the US where there’s a real sense of ‘can do’ attitude...a good business head is a very important life skill, and should be taught as part of the curriculum.’
Due to the current struggles the retail industry is facing, Jacqueline has ensured that Ann Summers is a ‘multichannel retailer’. She stated that ‘we have four sales channels in place- party plan, retail stores, internet and wholesale...the challenge is to ensure that these different channels work together as seamlessly as possible.’
Jacqueline recognises the importance of having a great product and being able to sell it in a way that catches the attention of consumers; she states that the internet has become their main domain and ‘is definitely our fastest growing of our four channels.’
Jacqueline advocates woman in business and she believes that it is important for parents to give their daughters confidence because women tend to lack self esteem in a working environment. Her twitter ‘WOW’ campaign supports and promotes female entrepreneurs and Jacqueline is doing her bit to promote equal pay for men and women in the workplace.
