Dedicated entrepreneur and adept business speaker, Luke Johnson, recently wrote an article about entrepreneurs and the ambition they require in order to become a success.
Luke writes that Daniel Defoe is one of his all time heroes and although he is famous for being an author he was also a “merchant, journalist, adventurer, publisher and spy”. His admiration of Daniel Defoe is due to Defoe’s ability to take risks in business and life; “Defoe was a classic risk-taker, a huge promoter of early capitalism and a prodigiously hard-working and resilient example to all.”
In his article Luke also writes about how David Geffen, a highly successful music manager, film and Broadway producer, who lied on his CV in order to get his first job in the talent industry. Luke takes a look at some of the other famous entrepreneurs who have taken risks in order to get to where they are now, including Richard Branson and himself. He does not condone bad behaviour, however he believes that it is the nature of entrepreneurs to take risks and not obey the rules, which can either lead them to trouble or success.
Luke finishes saying “In business, if you’ve done it once, then confidence, connections and experience combine to give you a huge advantage subsequently. Moreover, if you come from a good stable, the chances are you’ll do well.”
