Consultant Producer and after dinner speaker Alexis Conran has been busy at work on BBC One’s new series The Magicians. The show is presented by comedian Lenny Henry who has recently been honoured for his acting talents in Othello – winning Best Newcomer at the London Evening Standard theatre awards. The show brings together a host of magic talents and new celebrity guests each week – last week saw Peter Jones, Ade Edmonson and Amanda Byram test their talents and Chris Tarrant, Stephen K Amos and Samantha Womack will appear this Saturday. Magic has always been popular in one form or another but it seems to be experiencing a revival not seen since the likes of Paul Daniels and Alan Davies' Jonathan Creek on Saturday night prime-time TV.
ITV1 has also just started a new series presented by Jonathan Ross and starring the Las Vegas legends Penn & Teller called ‘Penn & Teller: Fool Us’. Any magician who comes onto the show and manages to fool the two magicians will win a trip to Las Vegas to perform in their world-renowned magic show at the Rio Hotel and Casino. The show runs five times a week so it gives Penn & Teller the chance to perfect their routine and constantly reinvent the art form. The duo may have been performing together for over 35 years but they have no intention of slowing down – the pace of their show schedule continues unabated and they have even just released their very own app for the iPhone.
Magicians, poker players, and after dinner speakers who can focus on both - such as Alexis Conran - are becoming increasingly popular. Alexis also concentrates on fraud prevention and security protection, aided by his work on The Real Hustle. Alexis will be working on series 10 and 11 of the popular BBC series this year and we look forward to checking out his exciting new shows as well as the magic illusions capable of outwitting Penn & Teller!
