Olympic Flame – from Athens to Victoria

30th October 2009

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Flame will arrive in Victoria, British Columbia, today, where it will start its 45,000km journey across Canada. The flame was passed from the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), following a short HOC relay run in Greece, to the Vancouver Organisers in the Panathenian Stadium in Athens yesterday, in a traditional ceremony.

The Vancouver delegation included Canada’s Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honorable Michaëlle Jean; Minister of State for Sport, Gary Lunn, and British Columbia mayors: Gregor Robertson (Vancouver), Ken Melamed (Whistler), Ross Forrest (Lake Cowichan), Ken McRae (Port Alberni), and Carol Kulesha (Queen Charlotte).

Day One

On arrival in Victoria, the flame will be met by high-ranking dignitaries at a ceremony at the airport, before being transferred to the Victoria legislative building for an arrival ceremony involving the four host First Nations and the Chiefs of local Nations. The relay will then travel around the region before returning to the legislature for an evening community celebration.

Vancouver and Whistler will host the XXI Olympic Winter Games from 12 to 28 February 2010 and the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from 12 to 21 March 2010. The seven winter Olympic sports that will be on show in Vancouver are luge, skiing, skating, ice hockey, biathlon, bobsleigh and curling.
