At midday today the City of London will see the opening of its largest shopping centre to date entitled ‘One New Change’ which will overlook the incredible views of St Paul’s Cathedral. Twenty or thirty years ago the city was an entirely different place dominated by offices and very traditional architecture but little else. Today more restaurants and cafes are establishing themselves and modern sights and shapes are changing the skyline, from the Gherkin to the Heron Tower, and even the forthcoming Pinnacle. Leading architect Jean Nouvel has even based the noticeable design of the structure on a US stealth bomber.
The centre will be open seven days a week and features 60 cafes, restaurants and some of the biggest brands including Topshop, Reiss, Hugo Boss, H&M, Banana Republic and Swarovski. A sixth-floor public roof terrace will also open next month for some fabulous views of the city and the floor to ceiling glass panes throughout the structure will flood the centre with natural light – the more the better given the impending darkness of Winter!
Keynote speaker Jamie Oliver will be opening his brand new restaurant Barbecoa - for all the meat aficionados out there – with Adam Perry Lang who owns Daisy May’s in New York. The restaurant will seat 200, is decked out in wooden features, includes an open kitchen, and offers a clear and very impressive view of St Paul’s Cathedral. Jamie has been discussing what kind of atmosphere he expects the city vibe to bring, “All I know is it’s a lot of pressure really. City boys come in all different shapes and sizes. They haven’t all got big wallets any more but they are busy boys and girls, so speed’s going to be an issue at lunch: glamour, something new, authenticity, value – even for City boys...It needs to be busy because if it’s not, it won’t last a month.” The barbecuing element is also something that Jamie has been very keen to bring to the UK, “The word barbecue is very misused in England...Barbecue properly done is something that we don’t do here, so it’s been nice to bring it to the City.”
For all the Dragons’ aficionados out there, there will also be a chance to meet speaker Richard Farleigh next Wednesday 3rd November for a few pearls of wisdom. 5-minute consultations will be taking place from 12-2pm in honour of the Prince’s Trust. Looking at the investment portfolio overall Richard has been the most successful Dragon to date so those 5 minutes could be life-changing!
There will be musical delights and further Halloween celebrations over the next few days so if you head there today or this weekend enjoy, enjoy!
