This week is Social Media Week, a time where we reflect on the change that has occurred within our society due to social media and the effects it has had on our communication.
Social media week is described as a ‘leading platform and worldwide event with local presence and global reach across five continents, including Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia.’
The week consists of SMW events in Bangalore, New York, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Lagos, Barcelona, Milan and Tokyo and there is a host of speakers that will be at the events. Last year one of the speakers at SMW was Jonah Peretti, the founder and CEO of Buzzfeed.
Buzzfeed was created by Jonah Peretti in 2006 and has since become one of the biggest sites on the internet, it is a prime example of a company that has benefitted majorly from social media. The website has grown to the extent that in December 2013, Buzzfeed had received 130 million unique visitors. A recent article stated that ‘currently the site has a “viral lift” of three-meaning three times as many people come to stories via social media.’
We live in a time where social media is a key aspect for businesses and without it, many companies may lack identity. Social media allows companies to show off their personality and to reach out to companies and clients, something that would not always have been possible before twitter, facebook, linkedin etc.
We have numerous speakers who promote social media and have used it to market their businesses and increase their popularity. We recently had Nathalie Nahai in to visit us in the office and she spoke to us about marketing and how best to use social media to catch your audience’s attention.
Alex Hunter worked as head of online marketing for the Virgin group and understands the importance that social media plays in representing a company and their values. As does keynote speaker Leonard Brody; Leonard speaks about how the web and social media have fundamentally changed our behaviours.
