Double amputee and motivational speaker, Spencer West, proved doctors wrong by climbing Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro.
Doctors told Spencer, aged five that he would not be a fully functioning member of society, yet his achievement says otherwise. Spencer left his wheelchair on the 5900m summit and continued climbing Kilimanjaro using only his arms to carry himself.
Talking about the experience, Spencer said “The bleeding fingers and blisters were all worth it. The moment the summit was within sight was incredible. The summit sign seemed almost like a mirage.”
Spencer, who is originally from Canada, managed to raise over 300,000 for charity Free the Children. Spencer hopes that his achievement will inspire others similar to him to overcome obstacles and challenges of their own.
