Tutu makes Hay

Guardian Culture 3rd April 2009

The South African cleric and Nobel prize winner Desmond Tutu will mark his British literary festival debut by appearing at Hay next month.

Described by Nelson Mandela as "sometimes strident, often tender, never afraid and seldom without humour" the former Anglican archbishop of Cape Town will be taking part in a discussion with the festival director Peter Florence on 28 May.

Tutu, 77, is renowned for his role in South Africa's struggle against apartheid. He spoke out against the regime, winning the 1984 Nobel peace prize, and chaired the country's Truth and Reconciliation Commission which investigated crimes committed during the apartheid years.

He has authored several collections of sermons and writings and, in 2007, lent his distinctive voice to an audio book, The Gospel According to Judas.
