Brand expert Rita Clifton was President of the Market Research Society, Vice Chairman and Strategy Director at Saatchi & Saatchi, and CEO and Chair of Interbrand. Amongst many chairing and non-executive roles, Rita has served on the boards of ASOS, Nationwide, Dixon’s Group, Bupa and Emap. Dubbed a ‘brand guru’ by the Financial Times, Rita defines a brand as an ‘organising idea to set you apart from the competition.’
Rita Clifton is a branding and marketing expert; described by The Daily Telegraph as ‘The Brand Leading the Brands’ and known by many as the ‘Brand Guru’. Her experience and knowledge in the world of business and branding have resulted in her becoming an accomplished and well respected keynote speaker.
Rita is the former chairman of Interbrand, the world’s leading Brand Consultancy firm, prior to that she was the Vice Chairman and Strategic Director at global advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi. She worked with many of the world’s most successful companies on their brand strategy, her clients included BMW, Rothschild, PwC, British Airways, Procter & Gamble, Marks & Spencer, Barclays and Thomson Reuters to name a few. While at Interbrand, Rita set up new brand services included digital branding, internal brand management and brand futures. Interbrand is also responsible for deciding the annual league table of the 100 most valuable brands in the world.
Her impressive portfolio includes her past positions as a non-executive Director of Dixons Retail Plc and Emap Plc, as well as her roles as trustee of WWF and President of the Market Research Association since 2009. Currently, Rita is the non-executive director of Bupa and Nationwide, Board Chairman for Populus( the opinion pollster to The Times and reputation research consultancy) and is chairing the brand firm BrandCap.
Rita has appeared on numerous TV and radio programmes to discuss the topics of business, brand, marketing and communication. She is a popular choice with networks including CNN, BBC, Channel 4, Sky and Bloomberg. Her recent TV appearances include the ‘Business Nightmares’ series and the Steve Jobs documentary ‘Billion Dollar Hippy’.
She speaks around the world on a range of topics that include leadership, corporate reputation, communicating sustainability and shares her expertise on branding and marketing. Rita has written a best-selling book, ‘The Future of Brands’ in addition to her two editions of The Economist book ‘Brands & Branding’. She has also been a reviewer and columnist for the Financial Times, Management Today and Marketing Week.
Rita has spent some of her time working with Sir Jonathon Porritt on environmental and sustainability issues, as a member of the UK Government's Sustainable Development Commission and the Assurance and Advisory Board for BP's carbon offset programme 'targetneutral'.
