An Interview With Peter Avis
You've faced some challenges in your rise through the hospitality industry. What's been key to getting you to where you are now?
The key to getting were I am today is always knowing how lucky I have been and knowing that all the hard work really does pay off...one day at a time is a strong motto of mine! Oh, and never, ever forget where you came from!
You've also got some great anecdotes! What's been your most 'wow' moment?
I always remember when Richard Branson (my big boss!) came into Babylon one day after not seeing him for over a year...and he commented on my new hair style! I was like, "Damn! Branson noticed my new hair!!"
How did you get into speaking professionally? What do you hope an audience will take away from a session with you?
The night I won UK restaurant Manager of the year. back in 2009, I was asked to speak to a small group of students up in Liverpool - I always remember just sharing my story and a couple of the students were really inspired. I knew that day I had to share my experiences to help others...I always hope from my talks that the audience will think, "Well if he can do it, so can we!"
What or who has been the greatest influence in your life?
My mum is truly the greatest influence in my life. Since I was a young lad growing up in Liverpool, she always told me and my sisters that we can do whatever we want in life; she always reminded that everyone has ten fingers and ten toes: a motto which as helped me so much in life!
What are your plans for the future?
My plans are to keep sharing my story to help inspire others as well as being a great leader in my restaurant to ensure that we shine a light on the great career of front of house service here in the UK!
