Karl Bushby
Karl Bushby is an adventurer and former British paratrooper specialising in decision-making under extreme uncertainty, navigating bureaucracy, and sustaining commitment over decades-long timescales. After serving with 3 PARA, he set out from southern Chile in 1998 with two unbreakable rules: no transport to advance, and no going home until he arrived on foot. Twenty-eight years later, having covered over 49,000 km across 29 countries, he has been jailed, banned from Russia, forced to walk 5,600 km the wrong way, and swum across the Caspian Sea to keep his route intact. In October 2026, after Eurotunnel refused him access to the service tunnel, he swam the English Channel and returned to British soil for the first time since 1998. Through his talks, Karl equips leaders and teams with practical frameworks for making consequential decisions with incomplete information, re-planning under pressure without losing sight of the objective, and working through systems that hold the power to say no indefinitely.
On 1 November 1998, Karl Bushby walked out of Punta Arenas, Chile, with a few hundred dollars, a hand-drawn route covering four continents, and two unbreakable rules: no transport to advance, and no going home until he arrived on foot. Twenty-eight years later, having crossed 29 countries and covered more than 49,000 kilometres, he swam the English Channel in October 2026 and stepped back onto British soil for the first time since he left. The Goliath Expedition, as he named it, has taken him through the Darién Gap, across the frozen Bering Strait, over deserts and mountains, and through jails, bans, bureaucratic dead ends, and a four-year pandemic lockdown that closed every land route he had planned. His objective never wavered, but his plan changed constantly, and that tension between commitment and adaptation now forms the core of what he teaches audiences facing long-term uncertainty.
Before the expedition began, Karl served for over a decade with 3 PARA, the third battalion of the British Army's Parachute Regiment. In 2001, he crossed the Darién Gap and was jailed for 18 days in Panama. In 2006, he spent 14 days crossing the frozen Bering Strait on drifting sea ice before being detained by Russian border troops. When Russia banned him in 2013, he walked 5,600 kilometres the wrong way across the United States to argue his case at the Russian Embassy in Washington, and the ban was lifted in 2014. When sanctions and the war in Ukraine made every land route into Europe impossible, he swam 288 kilometres across the Caspian Sea to keep his route intact. In June 2026, Eurotunnel refused him access to the service tunnel, citing safety and operational constraints. He secured French permission to swim the Channel and completed the crossing in stages with a support boat, arriving in England in early October. His journey, documented in his book Giant Steps and covered by the BBC, Reuters, and the Daily Mail, has become a case study in decision-making under sustained pressure.
Karl Bushby now works with executives, project leaders, and teams operating in environments where plans fail, information arrives incomplete, and timelines stretch beyond expectation. Through his keynotes, he walks audiences through specific decisions from the expedition: when to step onto sea ice that may not hold, when to wait out a ban or fight it, when to hold position through a pandemic or abandon a route, and how to re-plan under pressure without losing sight of the original objective. He also addresses the institutional obstacles that defined much of his journey, showing leaders how to work through gatekeepers, navigate bureaucracy without burning relationships, and build support from nothing in places where they hold no standing. His approach is practical and grounded in accountability, offering frameworks for making consequential decisions when optimism runs out and the constraints keep changing. With only the final walk to Hull remaining, Karl helps audiences stay committed without becoming rigid, make decisions amidst uncertainty, and keep moving forward when the outcome remains unknown.
