Awards haul for Coronation Street

5th September 2007

Coronation Street has won four prizes at the TV Quick and TV Choice awards, beating rival EastEnders to best soap. For the second year running, Doctor Who won two awards, including best actor for the show's star David Tennant.

The X Factor was named best talent show, while Ant and Dec won plaudits for I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! and Saturday Night Takeaway. Sitcom My Family, Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood and US hit series Desperate Housewives were also among the winners.

Coronation Street won the lion's share of the soap awards, with best soap actress for Sue Cleaver who plays Eileen Grimshaw, and best soap newcomer for former Hear'Say singer Kym Ryder (Michelle Connor).

The dramatic murder plot involving Tracey Barlow and Charlie Stubbs was named the year's best soap storyline.

EastEnders took the award for best soap actor, won by Charlie Clements who plays Bradley Branning.

Best actor winner Tennant, who is to appear as Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company next year, said he was "very excited and very scared" about his forthcoming stage role. He added that he did not know if he would play Doctor Who in the next full series, because "it's in 2010". The BBC has announced that the fifth run of the show - which won best loved drama at the awards ceremony in London - will return after a break in 2009.

Tennant's female co-stars Freema Agyeman and Billie Piper missed out in the best actress category, which was awarded to Jill Halfpenny for her role in BBC school drama Waterloo Road.

Channel 4's How To Look Good Naked scooped best lifestyle show, while Loose Women won in the daytime TV category.

Duo Ant and Dec said that despite problems affecting the broadcasting industry recently, it had been "an incredible year for telly". "If there are any kind of investigations, it can only be good for the viewer," said Ant.

The awards were decided in a vote of TV Quick and TV Choice magazine readers.
