Journalist, broadcaster and conference speaker, Michael Portillo presents 'Great British Railway Journeys' on BBC2

4th January 2010

The former MP, Minister of State for Transport, Secretary of State for Employment and Secretary of State for Defence, Michael Portillo is now one of the most highly regarded journalists, broadcasters and conference speakers in the UK.

He can be seen on our screens every Thursday evening on the Andrew Neil programme airing his views and pitting his wits against the Labour MP Diane Abbot.

His latest project begins this week on BBC Two.  It is a travel series called 'Great British Railway Journeys' and Michael travels the length and breadth of the country.  He finds out about the first railway fatality on the Liverpool to Eccles, how railways have helped create the national institution of fish & chips whilst travelling from Manchester to Bury, he travels back in time on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway on the Todmorden to York leg, during his Pontefract to Bridlington trip he searches for the last liquorice grower in Pontefract and fishes for sea bass and he goes birdwatching and deciphers traditional knitting patterns whilst on the Filey to Scarborough Leg.

Fifteen other railway journeys follow.
