In sports news: after a mixed year for the NFL – with the sport in rude health to the tune of £25bn (annual income) but coupled with a string of arrests of the sport’s top players – the focus came back to the field last night with the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots battling it out at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Using a fully inflated football, the Patriots fought back from 10 points down to clinch the game in a 28-24 win with newcomer/rookie Malcolm Butler intercepting a pass from Seattle's Russell Wilson at the New England end zone in the final seconds of the game. Speaking after game, Butler told press: 'I just had a vision that I was going to make a big play and it came true'.
Patriot Tom Brady won most valuable player (man of the match) throwing a total 4 touchdown passes setting a new Superbowl record (13 touchdown passes) in the process.
It means this is an historic fourth win for the Patriots and their first in 10 years with the team’s owner, Robert Kraft, saying ‘I love our team, I'm proud of our guys and we're going to carry on and hopefully do well’.
Music at the half time show – which is an event in itself – came from singer Katy Perry singing four songs with as many costume changes. She was joined by rocker Lenny Kravitz and rapper Missy Elliott.
