Juan is skilled at analyzing the complexity of international relations, economics and politics. Drawing on his first-hand knowledge, he speaks on the role of economic and financial ideas, specific economic risks, and international ideas and context regarding the EU and the US.

He is also a renowned expert in banking, business transformation processes and European politics. He is regularly invited to international forums and think-tanks such as the Milken Institute, the IMF and Bilderberg.

With more than 30 years’ experience in executive and decision-making positions, he has played a key role in the Spanish banking system (including different M&A in the 1990s or the management of financial and economic crisis). He was one of the architects of the bank merger process that created the Santander Group, in which he held various senior international, corporate and retail banking positions. At La Caixa, he led the complex transformation of the savings bank into "La Caixa" Banking Foundation, Criteria and Caixabank, one of Spain’s banking industry leaders.

Since his role as Program Director for the Ministry for the Relations with the European Communities (1978-1980), he has developed a strong commitment with the European project and the influence and relation between national, European and international economics and politics. Furthermore, he was president of the Spain-US Council and has been Member of the Board in different oil and gas companies.

He played a significant role in the Spanish negotiations for joining the EU and, afterwards, on how the European regulations affect the banking sector and the economy.

Currently, he continues his relation with the banking sector as Member of the Board of Directors at Société Générale (France) and his international activity as Senior Advisor at Corsair and Permira funds. He is also member of the Board at Azvi, Dia and Azora.

Education is his main passion. He is member of the Board of Governors at the University of Deusto (Bilbao) and ESADE (Barcelona). He eventually collaborates with his old school, the London School of Economics and Political Science (London).  He has also been a participant at the Bilderberg Conference.
