Priya Lakhani OBE is driven by her passion for entrepreneurship and success. A libel lawyer who left a secure and respected profession to follow her dream, she set up Masala Masala with not much more than a naïve optimism and family support. As it reached the top echelons of the UK food market, her fresh food company became the forerunner for Priya’s subsequent business and charitable enterprises.
When she first launched her fresh Indian food brand, Priya had her sights set on a major food festival where she saw an opportunity to impress buyers from high-end supermarkets. But with no experience, and very little time, the odds were stacked against her.
Priya was driving the van, her mum was cooking, and her dad was providing moral support. They made it to the festival, and in six weeks she had won orders from Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Waitrose.
As the company grew, so did the product, as did Priya’s experience and confidence, and before long she found herself amongst Britain’s most respected and lauded young entrepreneurs.
Using her drive and acumen, Priya was determined to set up a charity alongside her business, and began providing a hot meal to a homeless person in India for every pot of her sauces sold, millions have been helped due to Priya’s brilliant work.
A member of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills’ Entrepreneurs’ Forum, Priya is passionate about using her skills to educate the next generation of aspiring entrepreneurs, and advises Vince Cable on enterprise. She’s also an Advisory Board Member to the Education Foundation, the UK’s leading education think-tank.
Priya was awarded Business Entrepreneur of the Year in 2009, and was named on the Growing Business Young Guns list 2009; Management Today’s ’35 Women Under 35’ and shortlisted for Young Achiever of the Year in the Asian Women Awards.
Priya has judged the Great British Entrepreneur Awards; the Youth Business International Awards, and was awarded a British Community Honours Award, for her role in promoting the success of ethnic minorities in the UK.
In 2014, Priya launched her second business Century Tech, and was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours list of the same year, for services to Business, community and voluntary initiatives.
Century Tech is a cloud education forum, helping to overcome the challenges in learning and reducing teacher workload. This innovative idea uses big data analytics and cognitive neuroscience.
