Speakers Corner Connects: Black History Month Showcase
Black History Month takes place every year during the month of October and is one of Speakers Corner most busiest times of the year.
This year's theme is to Dig Deeper, Look Closer, Think Bigger, and so we're going to bring you a taste of what's to come by using our latest Speakers Corner Connects showcase programme to preview Black History Month.
Hosted by former English International rugby union player and BT Sport pundit Ugo Monye, we are delighted to bring you double Olympic Gold Medallist Nicola Adams MBE, diversity and inclusion expert Naomi Sesay, and renowned British-Nigerian historian, broadcaster and film-maker David Olusoga.

Diversity and inclusion expert Naomi Sesay began her 20 year television and media career working for MTV News as a Producer, Director and Presenter at the height of MTV Europe’s popularity. Naomi has become a powerful advocate for diversity, inclusion and social enterprise, with her most recent media roles including the On Screen Diversity Executive and Interim Head of Diversity & Inclusion at Channel 4, and Head of Innovation and Diversity for Media Trust.
Nicola Adams MBE
Nicola Adams MBE is a recently retired double Olympic Gold Medallist, WBO World Champion and is officially Great Britain’s most successful female boxer of all time. Over the course of the London 2012 games, she became an icon of the games after winning Great Britain’s first ever female boxing Gold, having defeated three time world champion Red Cancan. She instantly became a role model, realising her dream in front of millions, as the nation tuned in to see the world’s best female boxers come toe-to-toe for the first time in the Olympic Games.
David Olusoga
David Olusoga is a British-Nigerian historian, broadcaster and film-maker. His most recent TV series include Black and British: A Forgotten History (BBC 2), The World’s War (BBC 2), A House Through Time (BBC 2) and the BAFTA winning Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners (BBC 2). David was also a contributor to the Oxford Companion to Black British History and writes for The Guardian and is a columnist for The Observer and BBC History Magazine. He is also one of the three presenters on the BBC's landmark Arts series Civilizations.
Ugo Monye
Ugo Monye was a key player in the England Sevens squad between the 2002-2004 IRB World Sevens Series, and competed in the 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong. He also played a part in the England Saxons side that won the Churchill Cup in 2005 and 2008. Ugo proudly boasts a 13-year career playing for Harlequins at Twickenham Stoop which started in 2002. Since retiring, Ugo has gone on to present for BT Sport and ITV as a credible sports rugby pundit.
Speakers Corner Connects Showcase Series has been curated to show event organisers how the power of the spoken word can be delivered via a virtual platform during social distancing measures. It’s never been more important to be inspired by some of the greatest humans to have walked this planet.
