At the age of 23, professional explorer and adventurer Lucy Shepherd became a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and the youngest ever elected council member of the Scientific Exploration Society.

Lucy loves to go to the uncharted corners of our planet and document the many worlds she finds along the way. She takes her adventures as duties to open people’s eyes to the beautiful fragility of our planet, amplify the voices of climate advocates and support sustainable enterprise.

Her interest in exploring was developed at a young age. As a child, her family always described her as ‘adventurous’. It became her identity, and Lucy is now a full-time explorer, following on from her childhood dream! Having her first expedition in 2011 when she was 18, Lucy qualified as one of a team of 10 for a 10-week Arctic expedition to Svalbard with the British Exploration Society.

At the age of 29, Lucy tackled her biggest expedition to date: crossing Guyana’s Kanuku Mountains, deep in the Amazon Rainforest, which was featured in the National Geographic and The Times.

In 2023, Lucy took on the Untamed Amazon in Channel 4’s ‘Secret Amazon: Into the Wild’. This 50-day exhibition through unchartered Amazon terrain followed Lucy and her team as they navigated untouched wilderness, whilst confronting relentless dangers.

Facing wasp attacks, venomous snakes strike, skin infections, food shortages and many other unknown challenges during her adventures, Lucy has had to build her mental resilience over the years to cope with challenges, uncertainty, and high stress.

Through sharing her thrilling journeys with her audience, Lucy wants to inspire generations to protect Mother Earth and encourage people to get outside and connect more with nature.

As a speaker, Lucy spends her time giving keynote talks about resilience, sharing her experiences and tips to stay mentally strong during daring expeditions as well as talking about the benefits of embracing an “explorer mindset”.

Lucy said, “Even when things get really scary and intimidating, I make sure never to let the words ‘I can’t do this’ enter my mind,”. She firmly believes that we are capable of more than the barrier we put on ourselves.
