Julia Ebner is an award-winning author, academic and leading expert on extremism, radicalisation and terrorism prevention. As a Senior Resident Research Fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), Julia specialises in far-right extremism, conspiracy movements and the dynamics of reciprocal radicalisation.
Her work bridges rigorous research and real-world impact. Julia regularly advises parliamentary groups, intelligence agencies and tech companies, and has acted as a counter-terrorism consultant for the United Nations. She also guest lectures at leading universities and contributes her insights to outlets including The Guardian, Washington Post and Süddeutsche Zeitung. Her expertise has made her a trusted commentator across global media, including the BBC, CNN, Channel 4, ARD and France24.
Julia is the bestselling author of several acclaimed books. The Rage won the Bruno Kreisky Award for Political Book of the Year in 2018, while Going Dark became an international bestseller, praised for its powerful undercover insight into the lives of extremists. Her latest book, Going Mainstream, explores how extremist ideologies are seeping into everyday life and political discourse – and what can be done about it.
She holds a DPhil in Anthropology from the University of Oxford, where she remains a Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Social Cohesion. With additional degrees from LSE and Peking University, Julia brings a global perspective to the study of online hate, radicalisation and social cohesion. She’s also fluent in English, German and French, with additional language skills in Spanish and Mandarin.
