Dr Rumman Chowdhury stands at the forefront of artificial intelligence, dedicated to ensuring its development remains ethical, explainable, and transparent. A global thought leader in applied algorithmic ethics, she has designed cutting-edge socio-technical solutions that shape the future of responsible AI.
As CEO of the nonprofit Humane Intelligence, Dr Chowdhury fosters a community of practice for evaluating AI models and currently serves as the United States Science Envoy for Artificial Intelligence. In addition, she is a Responsible AI Fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, furthering her mission to align technology with humanity.
Dr Chowdhury’s work has made an impact at leading organisations. As Director of the ML Ethics, Transparency, and Accountability (META) team at Twitter, she spearheaded responsible AI initiatives. Previously, as Global Lead for Responsible AI at Accenture Applied Intelligence, she developed the Fairness Tool, an industry-first algorithmic tool to identify and mitigate bias in AI systems.
Beyond her professional work, Dr Chowdhury is committed to cultivating the next wave of ethical technology leaders. She founded the Parity Responsible Innovation venture capital fund, mentors with the Creative Destruction Lab, and serves on the boards of AI4All and the Startups and Society initiative.
Dr Chowdhury is deeply engaged in global AI policy, serving on boards such as the UK’s Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, UNESCO’s Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, and Oxford University’s Commission on AI and Governance. She has advised the UK House of Lords, testified to the FTC and New York City Algorithmic Commission, and collaborated with leading organisations, including the UN, OECD, and Partnership on AI.
Her insights have been featured by top-tier media outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, MIT Technology Review, and the BBC. Dr Chowdhury’s influence has also earned her accolades such as TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in AI, BBC’s 100 Women, and Forbes’ Five Who Are Shaping AI.
Dr Chowdhury holds two undergraduate degrees from MIT, a master’s in Quantitative Methods of the Social Sciences from Columbia University, and a doctorate in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego. With her unique blend of technical expertise and social insight, she is a trusted voice for organisations and policymakers navigating the complexities of ethical AI.
