London 2012 celebrates 1,000 days to go

31st October 2009

Saturday 31 October sees London 2012 celebrating exactly 1,000 days to go, with the news that over five million people are currently participating in London Games-related projects. Initiatives that are drawing people to get involved in the Games include the London 2012 Inspire Programme, which includes community projects related to sport, culture, business and sustainability; the “Get Set” education programme, which has reached over 11,000 schools; and the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad Open Weekend, which has seen thousands of people taking part over the past two years. On top of this, there are also the hundreds of companies that have won contracts to work on the 2012 project.

Events

The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) will be celebrating by holding events such as the launch of a Games-themed photographic exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery and an event at London’s iconic BT Tower. A number of LOCOG partners will also be participating in their own special ways over the course of the day. In addition, LOCOG has been hitting the streets and asking people what they hope to achieve in the next 1,000 days. The results will be broadcast at the London 2012 Live Sites across the country.

Inspiring people across the globe

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge commented on London’s milestone: “The Olympic Games are a massive undertaking. They require a real team effort to bring together all the elements that allow the best athletes from 205 National Olympic Committees to compete and fans worldwide to be inspired by their exploits. The people involved in London 2012 have so far done a magnificent job in preparing for the Games. Whether volunteers, senior officials or ordinary people in the street who support the Games and their local athletes, they are all helping to ensure that London 2012 will be a great success. The London Games are inspiring people across the globe through sport, and in the next 1,000 days, the IOC will continue to work closely with the organisers to ensure that the inspiration continues, as we all prepare for spectacular Games in 2012.”

LONDON 2012

London was elected as the host city for the Games of the XXX Olympiad on 6 July 2005 at the 117th IOC Session in Singapore. London eventually succeeded in the fourth round of voting, taking 54 votes from a possible 104. London faced stiff opposition during the vote from the other four Candidate Cities: Paris, New York, Moscow and Madrid. There will be 26 sports on the Olympic programme in London in 2012 and around 10,500 athletes.
