Portugal: Euro 2016 Winners

11 July 2016

Congratulations to Portugal - winner of the UEFA European Championship 2016 , the final of which took place Sunday 11th July in the Stade de France, Paris.

109 goals and 51 matches later, the end of a rollercoaster season was marked by a stunning score in the second period of extra-time by Éder (who had replaced Renato Sanches in the second half).

Beating the host team 1-0, Portugal made history as the first to advance from the group stage to go on and win the tournament.

Portugal Coach Fernando Santos remarked: "I've said before that our objective was to play in the final and win it".

O Jogo announces that the players will be honoured with the Order of Merit by the President right after their return: four medals were conquered in the IAAF European Athletics on Sunday before the win in the final of the UEFA EURO 2016.

Renato Sanches has been named SOCAR Young Player of the Tournament.

France's Captain Hugo Lloris commented: "We must be proud of what we have done. Even if we lost the game, we achieved many positive things in the tournament. I think we made many French people proud and that's the most important thing."

Further congrats to  Helena of Logistics  in our office, who won the office sweepstake and who has hinted that she may kindly spend this on treats for her colleagues.
