From 2003 to 2014, Gavin reaped renown as part of the core presenting team on BBC's current affairs programme Newsnight. Today, he continues to tackle contemporary issues as an anchor on BBC News 24, as host of the arts and culture programme HARDtalk, and as presenter for BBC Radio 4’s foreign affairs series Four Corners.

Starting out as a reporter on The Belfast Telegraph, Gavin shortly joined BBC Television as a Northern Ireland reporter, and then BBC TWO's Newsnight as a reporter and presenter.

He received a Royal Television Society award for his reports on the military build-up in the Aleutian Islands as part of the Reagan administration's New Maritime Strategy. He also presented BBC News 24's comprehensive coverage of the President Clinton/Lewinsky hearings.

In charge of shaping and directing BBC coverage from North America, Gavin has travelled extensively across the US and was accredited to the White House to cover the Bush and Clinton administrations. He was appointed to Washington Correspondent in 1989, and then Chief North America Correspondent a year later.

A respected author, Gavin has produced three novels: Loyalties, Powerplay, Deep Blue and The Blood Brother. In his non-fiction writing, he informs with ‘Lessons from the Top’ (how leaders get to the top and stay there) and examines ‘American discontent: The United States of Anger’.

His latest keynote topic is ‘The Decline of Trust’, where he debates how we have lost trust in the institutions which define our lives: our governments, public life, big business, the media and financial institutions. Drawing on contemporary narratives, such as 'plebgate' and the Leveson inquiry, he questions How can we Re-build Trust in the Suspicious Century?
