A multi-talented TV presenter with a background in economics, music and sport, Gethin Jones is best-known for his time on Blue Peter, and as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. An accomplished pianist and violinist (and sometime bagpipe player), Gethin has played with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. He is one of the UK’s most popular young TV presenters and awards hosts.
He became well-known during his time on Blue Peter, where he took on the most extreme, wonderful, scary and strangest challenges of his life.
Despite this success, Gethin did not set out to take the small screen by storm and, with a degree in Economics and Geography under his belt, seemed destined for a soberer career.
The stage soon beckoned, however, and, using his piano and violin skills, he became leader of three County orchestras and played with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. As well as music, Gethin was a rugby enthusiast, who represented Lancashire and had trials with Sale RFC.
His first foray into TV was with Popty on Welsh Channel S4C, as well as the channel's flagship youth magazine show, Uned 5 - where he obtained a Private Pilot's License as part of a filming challenge!
He presented Y Briodas Fawr (the big wedding) and Jones Jones Jones at Cardiff’s Millennium Centre (in both English and Welsh) where the world record was broken for the biggest gathering of people with the same surname. He’s also presented numerous live OB’s for S4C and the BBC.
Gethin presented Blue Peter for three and a half years before leaving in 2008. During his time on CBBC’s flagship show, he flew with the Red Arrows and in a WW2 Spitfire; was attacked by an alligator in Louisiana; rode the highest, fastest, tallest rollercoasters in the world; was the first person to light a candle at Elvis’s vigil to celebrate the 29th Anniversary of his death; and performed the Canterville Ghost with the English National Ballet in front of 2,000 people.
He also skated the infamous Cresta Run in St Moritz and fought as a Samurai Warrior in Japan. But his biggest moment was when he became the first civilian to finish the Royal Marine Commando 30 mile Yomp - he finished in a time of 8hrs 20mins... in about 7 pieces!
Gethin was a semi-finalist in BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing 2007. Post-Strictly, his projects have included presenting a Police Camera Action special for ITV1 as well as Gethin Jones’ Danger Hunters for Virgin1 where he chased deadly weather around the world.
In 2009, he took to the dance floor once again, touring Nationwide with the Strictly Come Dancing arena tour; starred in his first pantomime; and hosted the Golden Globes red carpet coverage for Sky1.
He has hosted game show ‘Sell Me The Answer’ for Sky1; worked on E24, a weekly News Entertainment/Showbiz round-up for BBC News; presented The Gethin Jones Show Saturday and Sunday mornings on Radio 5 Live; narrated BBC’s Young Musician of the Year, live at Cardiff’s Millennium Centre; co-presented a week of The One Show for BBC1; and presented shows for the National Lottery on BBC1.
He has also hosted 71 Degrees North for ITV1 and returned to Wales for a week long run in the Rocky Horror Show, as the Narrator.
Gethin is the face of Holland & Barrett, the UK’s leading retailer of vitamins and mineral supplements.
Highly experienced in hosting events, Gethin has many an anecdote to entertain his audience with, including those on the corporate circuit.
