Sahar Hashemi OBE is one of the UK's most inspirational female entrepreneurs, a bestselling author and an internationally recognised thought leader and keynote speaker on innovation and entrepreneurship. She shares her captivating story of building two famous brands, Coffee Republic and Skinny Candy, recounting her journey of turning a kitchen table idea into a £50m business.
From a top-notch corporate lawyer who knew nothing about retail to an entrepreneur who turned the Brits from tea lovers into coffee drinkers, Sahar Hashemi has a great story to share as a keynote speaker.
Her presentations are unique, blending her experiences of building two famous brands - Coffee Republic and Skinny Candy - with the key ‘habits’ for innovation and creativity; she brings her convictions to life by connecting with her audiences through story-telling.
In order to nurture an entrepreneurial mind-set in businesses at all levels, including large organisations, Sahar explains the need to impersonate your customers (‘step into your customers' shoes’); avoid becoming set in your ways (‘the importance of being clueless’); be fully present at work (‘take 100% of yourself to work’); and implement a trial and error culture at work (‘bootstrapping’).
She also encourages individuals to develop persistence when new ideas are rejected (‘notch up no’s’) and to make sure they make time for creativity (‘get out of the office’).
In her bestseller ‘Anyone Can Do it – Building Coffee Republic from our Kitchen Table', Sahar reveals the secrets that helped her and her brother give up their lucrative careers to build a nationwide chain of coffee bars in 5 years with an annual turnover of £30 million.
After Sahar left the day-to-day management of Coffee Republic, she turned her entrepreneurial skills to Skinny Candy, labelled hip by Vogue magazine. Skinny Candy was sold to Glisten PLC in 2007.
Her second book, Switched On, published in 2010, focuses on 8 habits that foster a more creative mind-set for employees.
In 2011, Sahar was nominated by Director magazine as a Top 10 Original Thinker, and was praised for her ‘entrepreneurially minded talent.’
The same year, she was invited to join the Entrepreneurs Forum set up by UK Business Secretary Vince Cable to give informal personal advice to the government on enterprise policies.
Sahar has also been awarded an OBE 'for services to the UK economy and to charity' and, in 2016, she was named in the Maserati 100, a list compiled by the Centre for Entrepreneurs, recognising philanthropists, investors and entrepreneurs who are 'generously giving their time and resource to support the next generation of young entrepreneurs'.
Her speaking topics include:
- Nurturing entrepreneurial behaviour in organisations at every level
- Journey of an entrepreneur: from kitchen table to £30m turnover
- Women in business: the new feminine template
