Zanny Minton Beddoes

Appointed Editor-in-Chief of The Economist in 2015, Zanny Minton Beddoes is considered one of the most influential voices in financial journalism; she speaks about global affairs, finance, economics and media.

She first joined the paper in 1994 as its emerging markets correspondent, travelling extensively to produce editorials and country analyses, before eventually overseeing the business, finance, economics, science and technology coverage as its Business Affairs Editor.

From 2007 to 2014, Zanny served as the Economics Editor and led the global economics coverage. As well as surveys on the world economy, Germany, Latin American finance, global finance and Central Asia, she has written extensively about international financial issues including enlargement of the European Union, the future of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and economic reform in emerging economies.

Prior to her career with The Economist, Zanny spent two years at the IMF, where she worked on macroeconomic adjustment programmes in Africa and the transition economies of Eastern Europe. She has also  previously worked as an adviser to the Minister of Finance in Poland, as part of a small group headed by Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Harvard University.

She is now a trustee of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a member of the Research Advisory Board of the Committee for Economic Development.

She has been published in Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy, contributed chapters to several conference volumes and, in 1997, edited ‘Emerging Asia’, a book on the future of emerging markets in Asia. In 1998, she testified before Congress on the introduction of the Euro.

A regular television and radio commentator on both sides of the Atlantic, Zanny has appeared on the likes of ‘Tucker Carlson Unfiltered’ (PBS), the ‘Bill Maher Show’ (HBO), ‘Fareed Zakaria GPS’ (CNN), ‘Newsnight’ (BBC), ‘Newshour’ (PBS), CNBC and ‘Public Interest’ (NPR).
