Finding your voice | A Q&A with Greg Searle

1 January 2012

What can a typical corporate audience learn from your experiences?

The need for adaptability, humility and a sense of purpose.

How did the corporate speaking begin?

I loved being in the school play but I could never remember the words. When I won the Olympics at 20 I found myself back on the stage to tell my story but this time the words flowed because I had written the script with over 20 years of learning to understand the positive and negative experiences i’ve been through.

Which event has been your favourite, and why?

I enjoyed speaking at the National Theatre in London following the Beijing Olympics. It was very special to be in an arena with such a large audience and great acoustics. I was able to get the whole audience on their feet and testing their own ability to remain focused under pressure.

If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

I’d like to have spoken in Singapore when we won the bid to host the 2012 Olympics. London’s successful campaign brought together sporting heritage, organizational understanding and pure emotion. These are key elements that I believe I bring to the stage.

Who would you most like to share a platform with?

Ferris Beuller when he hijacked a float and whipped the crowd into a frenzy at the parade through New York City (before running home to pretend to his parents he had been ill in bed all day for anyone who doesn’t know the story!).

What are your most frequently requested speaking topics?

How can we recapture the togetherness we felt during the London Olympics? How to adapt to perform in the current tough economic conditions? How to perform with the enthusiasm of a 20-year-old but with the wisdom of a 40-year-old?

What do you do to ensure your presentation has a lasting impact?

I recognize the most important stories of the day come from the people in the audience, not the person on the stage.
