Keeping It Fresh: New Speakers We Worked with in 2018

2 January 2019

2018 has been an incredible year for Speakers Corner.

We had 75 speakers visit the office to deliver bespoke, intimate presentations for the team. We had over 1000 events take place. And we sent every single team member out to events to scout for new talent.

In our downtime - particularly in the account management team - we love to explore new, exciting speakers. We can quickly identify gaps in the market based on the enquiries we receive, and love nothing more than responding to this with targeted research. We use recommendations from clients, our own research, and going to see people in the flesh to hand-pick up-and-coming speakers to add to our list.

It is really important for us to be at the top of our game. We have some clients who have been holding the same event for 15 or 20 years, and it is our responsibility to ensure we are offering cutting-edge and varied speakers to keep the event alive. Equally, we have first-time clients, who trust us to provide a well thought out, and extremely current, list of recommendations.

As a team at Speakers Corner, we go out and see as many speakers as we can. Our own events, new comedy, or last minute panel discussions - we do everything we can to be there. This way, we know our speakers inside out and can perfectly match them with client events. We also do this for quality control - we wouldn’t want to recommend a speaker who we haven't seen perform well!

In 2018, we saw and booked a wealth of refreshing new speakers. Like Christie Watson, an NHS nurse for 20 years turned author. Or the über-cool Louise Troen, who is the VP of Marketing and Communications across the EMEA branch of Bumble.

And it doesn’t stop there. Take Saleyha Ahsan, for example, a doctor, TV broadcaster and former British Army officer. An all round renaissance woman, Saleyha also speaks on diversity as well as her out of the ordinary experiences in in Syria and Libya. Oh, and she also still practices as an A&E doctor.

There is no set ‘type’ at Speakers Corner. You could hear from Chris Jewell, one of the crucial cave divers in the rescue of 12 boys at the Tham Luang Thailand cave rescue in 2018.

Or Wim ‘The Iceman’ Hof, who shares his fascinating ‘Wim Hof method’, which allowed him to achieve insane world records like running up Everest half-naked or swimming under ice for longer than he probably should be doing.

From WIRED Innovation Fellow and Founder of Open Bionics, Samantha Payne, to Emma Gannon from the Ctrl Alt Delete Podcast, our range of under-30 speakers is one of our most inspiring areas of growth.

If 2018 is any example to follow, we can't wait to see what 2019 brings. One thing we know for sure, is that our entire team remains dedicated to recruiting new and exciting speakers every week.
