King's Speech Steals The Show at Baftas

The art of public speaking has never been so widely extolled as now. British-made The King’s Speech was the toast of the land last night at the glittering Orange Bafta Awards, as it swept the board with seven wins, including Best Film.

Colin Firth who played the speech-impaired King George took home the Best Actor award; Helena Bonham Carter was awarded Best Supporting Actress for playing his wife the Queen Mum, and Geoffrey Rush was honoured for his Best Supporting Actor part as the King’s speech therapist.

On stage Firth was as commanding and masterful as on screen, as he conveyed his joy at the success of his latest role, and joked, “I like coming here, thank you Bafta.”

The film tells the inspirational story of King George VI who had to overcome the seemingly insurmountable hurdle of a stammer in an age where radio was revolutionising public speaking.

The 2011 Baftas were hosted by TV and radio presenter and comedian Jonathan Ross, who led the proceedings with a dry British wit and a collection of nifty little one-liners.
