Miguel Luengo-Oroz

Scientist, entrepreneur, policy advisor, and engineering professor, Miguel is passionate about imagining and building responsible technology for social impact.

As the first data scientist to work at the United Nations, he is a pioneer and a thought leader, particularly in the use of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for global health, humanitarian action and sustainable development.

Dr Miguel delves into the positive impact technology has on society as well as its future risks and opportunities, the concept of Responsible Artificial Intelligence and its implications for governance and human rights.

He was the former Chief Data Scientist of UN Global Pulse, where he was responsible for technology, strategy, and growing & leading the science teams.

Having advised leadership on frontier technologies and implications for governance and human rights for over a decade, Miguel has worked in many domains with a vast array of international organisations, governments and private sectors.

He is also the Founder and CEO of the social enterprise, Spotlab, a digital health platform leveraging the best AI and mobile technologies for clinical research and universal diagnosis, and invented MalariaSpot.org - a crowdsourcing video game for malaria diagnosis.

As a research scientist, Miguel has worked on topics such as generative AI & creativity, Collective Intelligence, Systems Biology & Neurogeometry, and has co-authored over a hundred multidisciplinary scientific articles, policy briefs and op-eds.

As an esteemed keynote speaker, Miguel has spoken regularly for lots of scientific, policy, industry and general audiences, including the governments of Spain and the USA, about an array of topics.
