Niall, author of Civilization: The West and the Rest, and other acclaimed books, is Professor of History at Harvard University; a Senior Fellow at Stanford University, and a Senior Research Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford. He has also made a documentary series for PBS and Channel 4.
Niall’s is a regular contributor to TV and radio in the UK and the US. He commentates on contemporary politics and economics, and writes a weekly column for Newsweek as well as contributing regularly to Bloomberg TV.
Short-listed for the History Today Book of the Year award, Niall’s first book, Paper and Iron: Hamburg Business and German Politics in the Era of Inflation 1897-1927, was followed by a collection of essays he edited, Virtual History: Alternatives and Counterfactuals, which became a bestseller.
Niall’s book The Pity of War: Explaining World War One and The World’s Banker: The History of the House of Rothschild won the Wadsworth Prize for Business History and was also short-listed for the Jewish Quarterly/Wingate Literary Award and the American National Jewish Book Award.
In 2003 Niall wrote and presented a six-part documentary on the history of the British Empire for Channel 4. Alongside the TV series, the book, Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power, became an international bestseller.
It was the sequel to this book, Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire, which Niall credits for his position as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, as voted for by Time magazine.
In 2008 he wrote the TV series The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World 8, which won the International Emmy award for Best Documentary.
