Richard Aldrich
Professor Richard Aldrich is a leading expert on intelligence, espionage and cyber security, known for making the hidden world of spies and state surveillance both accessible and compelling.
Professor Richard Aldrich is one of the UK’s foremost authorities on intelligence, cyber security and the secret machinery of the state. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Professor of International Security at the University of Warwick, Richard co-leads the university’s Cyber Security Global Research Priority programme – a cross-disciplinary initiative that explores the most pressing digital security challenges facing governments, organisations and individuals today.
Richard’s research spans the complex relationship between surveillance, privacy and liberty, with a focus on how new technologies are shaping our security landscape. His most recent project, Spaceman, shines a light on the UK's pioneering – and largely untold – history in computer security, exploring how Britain’s early cyber efforts have shaped the modern digital world.
A prolific author, Richard has written some of the most respected and accessible books on intelligence and espionage. These include the bestselling GCHQ: The Uncensored Story of Britain’s Most Secret Intelligence Agency, The Black Door: Spies, Secret Intelligence and British Prime Ministers, and The Secret Royals, co-authored with historian Rory Cormac – a fascinating account of the hidden relationship between the British monarchy and the intelligence services.
In addition to his academic and written work, Richard is a well-known voice in the media. He’s appeared on The One Show, Newsnight, Radio 4’s Today Programme, and Nightwaves, and has co-presented history documentaries for Channel 4. His ability to communicate complex topics clearly and engagingly has made him a trusted commentator on everything from modern espionage to cyber warfare.
Richard has also supported major museum exhibitions related to national security and intelligence, and continues to advise English Heritage on the London Blue Plaques scheme – recognising historic figures and places with lasting impact.
As a speaker, Richard is insightful, engaging and highly versatile. He speaks on a wide range of subjects including the evolution of British intelligence, modern-day cyber threats, digital surveillance, and the ethical dilemmas posed by state secrecy. Whether discussing Cold War spies or today’s cyber landscape, he offers audiences a rare and richly informed perspective – blending historical depth with sharp contemporary relevance.
Richard’s sessions are particularly well suited for audiences interested in geopolitics, digital security, privacy, leadership and policy. He brings a calm authority, a touch of dry humour, and a talent for storytelling that makes even the most secretive corners of statecraft come to life.
