An Interview With Kevin Gaskell

1 January 2012

If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

Something where I can help to influence an audience of young leaders to realize that they can achieve astonishing success if they believe and then organise to deliver…

How did the corporate speaking begin?

As the CEO of Porsche or BMW, I was often asked to speak about my business and my experiences of driving change. I was asked to explain how we lead a business from position 31/31 (last!) in customer satisfaction to 1/31 in four years. How we improved profitability at a multibillion dollar company by 500% in four years – and always with the existing team. This continued after I left these companies and I gradually found myself involved in the professional speaking circuit. I have

I have travelled the world, spoken at some amazing events and met some outstanding people, both as fellow speakers and in the groups I have spoken to.

Which event has been your favourite and why?

That’s a hard question to answer. I recently spent two days working with one of Africa’s largest and most important companies. The CEO has recognized that the company has a major opportunity for growth but needs to change in order to achieve that growth. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the team on the culture change necessary to take the necessary steps forward. I also enjoyed delivering the keynote speech at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year retreat. The challenge was to speak to 150 of the brightest and most capable – and already most successful - business people around and to leave them with something valuable. Great fun!

Who would you most like to share a platform with?

I would like to share the platform with the Prime Minister of the UK (I have shared the platform with prime ministers of 2 major countries) and debate and discuss with him/her the total cost of the state machinery in this country. I would also like to share the platform with Warren Buffett, Albert Einstein (tricky!), Neil Armstrong and Muhammad Ali.

What are your most frequently requested speaking topics?

Leadership in the corporate environment. What do you actually do to get a business to change for the better? How do you really make it happen? How do you help an ordinary team achieve extraordinary results? I also speak about expeditions – what does it take to walk to the North and South Poles…and why!?

What do you do to ensure your presentation has a lasting impact?

I use real examples from my experience of leading change in various companies both large and small. I explain how you can turn a supertanker of a company into a formation of aligned speedboats. I share my experience of building a market leading company from just an idea and use practical examples of tools that the audience can take away and put into place immediately.

What can a typical corporate audience learn from your experiences?

How to make a positive change in their own environment. How to create an environment and implement a plan which mobilizes the company or team to drive the change. How to make it simple, uncomplicated, inclusive, exciting, fun – and highly effective.
