An Interview With Mark Brill

1 January 2012

Q: What do you do to ensure your presentation has a lasting impact?

Principally I like to tell a single story that has a clear theme. Hopefully, that will include ideas that can be easily shared through social media or with colleagues. I also like to be pragmatic by involving the audience and sharing examples that illustrate particular ideas.

Q: How did the corporate speaking begin?

It’s been steadily growing over the last ten years, as I’ve developed my insight into mobile channels and innovation.

Q: Which event has been your favourite and why?

Most recently, it’s been presenting to 350 teenagers at the iMax cinema in Paris. They can be a difficult audience, but they were very engaged. I also had a lot of fun presenting Powerpoint on a screen that is three stories high.

Q: Why do you love being a speaker?

I get a real sense of achievement communicating ideas to an audience. It’s most powerful when I can see that people are thinking differently as a result of something I’ve said.

Q: If you could speak at any event, past or future, what would it be?

I’ve spoken at TEDx, but I would really like to speak at TED Global. I’m always impressed by the quality of the speakers and their ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple way.

Q: Who would you most like to share a platform with?

For pure entertaining insight, it would have to be Morgan Spurlock. I also admire the tech pioneers such as Tim Berners-Lee and James Dyson, so they would also be good to share a platform with.

Q: What can a typical corporate audience learn from your experiences?

Innovation is never about the technology, it’s about people and problems. Organisations are truly innovative when they can focus on their challenges and match solutions to their audience’s needs.

Q: What personal ambition must you fulfill before you die?

I have many personal ambitions, but at the moment I’m trying to develop a project to harness the power of smartphones to cure disease. My ambition is to see that project become a reality.
