Bill’s broadcasting career began at Glasgow local commercial radio station Radio Clyde in 1978. In 1980, he became a reporter for LBC and Capital Radio in London, before freelancing in the USA.
He joined the BBC as a reporter for Radio 4's Today programme in 1986, and after three years he moved to Breakfast Time, where he reported on current affairs and world-shaping events, including the Lockerbie disaster and the Romanian Revolution of 1989.
In the midst of a turbulent landscape, Bill carved a career for himself and secured a role as a correspondent in 1990, for the BBC. As a News Correspondent, he covered every type of story, from local issues to presidential elections, and between 1994 and 1998, as the BBC’s Washington Correspondent, he reported on the Moscow uprising, the Oklahoma bomb, OJ Simpson’s infamous trial and the political bombshell that was the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky scandal.
On the news frontline during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Bill’s popularity grew and he became a regular presenter on BBC News 24 and BBC Radio 5 Live, before joining the Breakfast presenting team full-time.
In 2005, he was a contestant in the third series of the BBC dancing competition Strictly Come Dancing.
