Bill’s broadcasting career began at Glasgow local commercial radio station Radio Clyde in 1978. In 1980, he became a reporter for LBC and Capital Radio in London, before freelancing in the USA.

He joined the BBC as a reporter for Radio 4's Today programme in 1986, and after three years he moved to Breakfast Time, where he reported on current affairs and world-shaping events, including the Lockerbie disaster and the Romanian Revolution of 1989.

For Bill, there could have been no steeper learning curve. How to make TV in the midst of rapidly changing and emotive events drew him to imagine correspondent roles, and in 1990 his dream became a reality at the BBC. As a News Correspondent, he covered every type of story, from local issues to presidential elections, and between 1994 and 1998, as the BBC’s Washington Correspondent, he reported on the Moscow uprising, the Oklahoma bomb, OJ Simpson’s infamous trial and the political bombshell that was the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky scandal.

On the news frontline during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Bill’s popularity grew and he became a regular presenter on BBC News 24 and BBC Radio 5 Live, before joining the Breakfast presenting team full-time.

In 2005, he was a contestant in the third series of the BBC dancing competition Strictly Come Dancing.

In his spare time he looks after his chickens and, rather more hazardously, several hives of bees. He likes to unwind by watching what he calls "the Pride of the Chilterns" – Wycombe Wanderers.
