Simon Calder: After Dinner Speakers
After becoming travel editor of The Independent, Simon Calder began to present BBC 2's Travel Show and to contribute to the Holiday programme. He now hosts the Travel Clinic on LBC 97.3, regularly pops up on Radio 4 and comments on travel issues across all the national media. With a policy of paying his way wherever he travels in the world, Simon always finds that the most interesting stories tend to come from the cheap seats.
Simon Calder is Britain's leading travel commentator and a charismatic after-dinner speaker on the adventures and misadventures of a travel writer.
After a camping trip to the Lake District, Simon had caught the travel bug. Shortly afterwards, Simon tried his luck at hitch hiking, and he has kept going ever since. Writing good travel guides and articles, Simon made his way to the position of Senior Travel Editor of The independent. He regularly writes for the Evening Standard and the iPaper too.
He has also written for Conde Nast Traveller, BA’s inflight magazine, High Life, and the trade publication, Travel Trade Gazette.
Simon has presented the Fast Track’s Travel Clinic on BBC Worldwide where he answers viewers travel questions and queries. He also films a Weekly Video Diary which he posts online and has a strong following.
Previously a contestant on Celebrity Mastermind, and his specialist subject was Concorde – he even managed to win!
Simon is also a regular guest on national TV, often seen on BBC Breakfast News, Daybreak, ITV News, CNN and Sky News. He is often interviewed on BBC radio, particularly for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Five Live.
In 2012 Simon won the award for Outstanding Achievement and Broadcast Journalist of the Year at the Travel Press Awards, and the News Journalist of the Year for Print at the Business Travel Journalism Awards.
