With a simple aim - helping women to look and feel their very best – Founder of Ultimo, Michelle has been honoured by the Queen with an OBE for her contribution to business, and is regularly listed as one of the UK’s top female entrepreneurs.
Raised in Glasgow’s east end, Michelle left school at the age of 15 to find a full-time job after her father became ill and was confined to a wheelchair. As an office junior at Labatt Brewers, Michelle began to show promise and by the age of 22 she had become the Director for Scotland, and Head of the Sales and Marketing team.
After an uncomfortable underwear experience at a dinner dance, Michelle came up with a new business idea to introduce a well fitted and cleavage enhancing bra that was more comfortable and glamorous than any others currently on the market. Ultimo was born in 1996.
Ultimo has grown significantly over the years and they have invented new underwear and introduced brands such as Ultimo Bridal, Ultimo Swimwear, Ultimo Shapewear and they have created a joint venture with Debenhams called Adore Moi. The Ultimo brand is sold in Debenhams, Littlewoods, ASOS.com, House of Fraser and Harrods and it continues to expand. Michelle has also delved into beauty products and brought out UTan, a self-tanning lotion which received rave reviews and USculpt, a body lotion that re-shapes and re-sculpts the contours of the body.
Michelle has established herself as one of Scotland’s biggest exports. Winning the ‘World Young Business Achiever Award’ at the Epcot Centre, Florida, followed by the ‘Business Woman of the Year’ at the Corporate Elite Awards in London, she cemented her position as a world business leader.
Invited by Prince Charles in 2001 to join the Board of Directors for the Princes Scottish Youth Business Trust, Michelle is also a member of his Board of Main Council.
Michelle has spoken at numerous events and has attended a speaking event with Mikhail Gorbachev and former US President Bill Clinton. She also supported the Sultan of Oman in setting up women’s enterprise in the Middle East. Michelle is an adept keynote speaker and has been a popular guest at a variety of international corporate events.
Ultimo was the first UK lingerie brand to debut at New York Fashion Week in 2009, and Michelle - an expert in diet, health, fashion and business, she enjoys a raving Twitter following and is known as a cultural influencer.
