John had a very successful career as a boxer and quickly became one of the UK’s most loved sportsmen, as an amateur boxer he was beating some of the world’s best boxers at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and won three Gold medals. He later won the ABA titles at middleweight and a year later he won the light-heavyweight championship.
Due to his success as an amateur boxer, the nation expected great things from John and he did not disappoint. In 1993, John beat some of the world’s best boxers and became the World Boxing Council’s World Crown Holder. John eventually lost his world title in 1977 and his last attempt to win it back was in 1980.
John soon retired from boxing due to hand injuries, however he is still considered to be one of Britain’s most successful boxers. John proved he was an all round talented athlete when he won the British Superstars TV competition in 1974, he is also a keen golfer and plays of a handicap of 8.
